For Goodness Sakes
Effy Cakes
When my older grandaughter was born, I wrote her a song. Her name was Effy, so I thought it would be really fun to write a song based on the melodic fragment FE. I went on to write a work of such cleverness that music theorists will be talking about it for hundreds of years.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t that great to listen to.
I wrote a different song for my younger grandaughter Ayla (“Ayla Bean,” which I discuss in a different post) and that one swung. It wasn’t clever, just foot-stomping fun. It was such a hit that I began to have feelings of remorse for what I’d unloaded on Effy.
So I wrote her a second song. That one was bad too.
So I wrote her a third song.
You can decide if you think this one has legs. It’s got a New Orleans feel backed by three horns, and a hell of a chorus! This is the song I want Effy to keep.
